movement reviewed; bands in the future

The Detroit Free Press calls Movement 2009, the techno-centric festival in Detroit over the weekend, a "success," buying the promoter's three-day attendance numbers of 75,692 - more than last year. Pop critic Brian McCollum states, however, that the fest is looking at expanding beyond the two-turntables paradigm for next year. (Hmm).

Promoter Jason Huvaere, he writes, "is among those who understands that electronic dance music has grown well beyond its DJ-and-a-turntable origins. ... 'The music is evolving, and we have to evolve with it," said festival director Huvaere. "Does that mean hybrid projects? Bands? Something we're not aware of yet? I think those performances are absolutely in our future.'"

carl craig returns to movement fest

Second generation Detroit techno titan Carl Craig returns the the Movement festival he helped create in that city in 2000, organizers announced today. Craig comes back as creative director for Movement 2010. He was the fest's co-founder and artistic director until 2001 when promoters dismissed him (and he filed a subsequent lawsuit).

"Carl is a musical visionary whose ambassadorship is unparalleled," states Jason Huvaere, president of the company that eventually took over Movement's promotion, Paxahau. "He will be able to capture the desires electronic music fans have for Movement and help us to incorporate them into future festivals."

"Detroit is such a wonderful music town," Craig added. "With Movement we have such a great opportunity to remind people from around the world and those that are right here in our own backyard that electronic music in Detroit is very powerful and that our annual festival is the best stage for showcasing the most talented artists of this musical genre."

planet rock revered

The Detroit Free Press, anticipating this weekend's Movement 2009 festival, runs a piece on Afrika Bambaataa's groundbreaking "Planet Rock," calling the Kraftwerk-sampling tune " game-changing work that stands as the cornerstone of both hip-hop and electronic music ... "

"'Planet Rock' was the epitome of what hip-hop could do," Z-Trip tells the paper. "Take anything, run it through a prism, flip it and make it bigger than it could have been. That's what we have today. It's all an extension of that one thing."

Baambaataa, Z-Trip and many more are scheduled to perform at Movement.

movement goes to italy

Movement 2009, formerly known as Detroit's Electronic Music Festival, today made a few announcements, including the formalization of a deal between its promoter, Paxahau, and its Italian host, Movement Torino, to continue Movement-branded events in that city. The two parties will co-host the closing soiree for Movement May 25 at Plan B in Detroit.

"The national and international appeal of the Movement festival proves that music is still one of Detroit's greatest assets," states Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel, Jr. "We expect Movement 2009 to attract a new wave of electronic music fans to Detroit for Memorial Day weekend."
