Interesting: Am I sensing a turn away from trance? I guess the big news here is Kanye, Cee Lo the Chemical Brothers and Sasha. Steve Angello gets huge billing -- bigger than, say, the Klaxons or even the sole trance artist we could spot, Paul Van Dyk (must be lonely).

Duck Sauce will bring Armand Van Helden and A-Trak to the desert. Reading the finer print ... is that Leftfield? Blast from the past. Boys Noize, Afrojack, Fedde Le Grand, DJ Hype, Green Velvet, Jack Beats (puts on reading glasses) and Trentemoller, among others, represent core EDM.

It's a much more critically potent and edgy lineup than last year's Deadmau5/Kaskade/Tiesto dependent talent. We're assuming organizers hope the vibe will improve too.

Now the global icon has announced he will return for an all-ages special engagement at Terminal 5 on Saturday, February 19 as part of a select run of North American winter tour dates. “New York has always been one of my favorite destinations in the U.S.,” states VAN DYK. “From my residencies at Limelight (Disco 2000), Twilo and the Central Park shows, I always felt a very special connection with my audience there. Creating the right atmosphere has always been a major part of presentation at a PvD show. For Terminal 5, VAN DYK and his team are currently working with a major festival stage designer and light artist to create a fascinating surrounding for the music. With rumblings there is a new artist album in the works for 2011, fans will get a sneak preview to the upcoming visual concept of its complimenting live tour.

Adds PvD, “I will play some of my own classics, but also a lot of new material from the upcoming album as I’m nearly finished with the production. There will be a lot of great collaborations on there which I’m very excited about and I can’t wait for it to be released.”

Richie Hawtin's triumphant return to the stage as Plastikman in 2010 proved that his best-known alias is as innovative and as relevant as ever. Hawtin has taken Plastikman’s most classic material, originally released between 1993 and 2003, and reworked it for a truly live performance accompanied by mind-bending, synchronized visuals—a sound and light show like no other, one that collapses the distance between present-day festivals and the uncompromisingly underground warehouse parties of the mid '90s.

For many attendees, this is their first taste of Plastikman. Since 2003, Hawtin has been far better known simply as Richie Hawtin, the celebrated DJ and mastermind behind the Minus label. Some fans today were still infants when Plastikman’s acid ripple first began streaming from Hawtin's basement studio in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

For long-time devotees and new fans alike, Hawtin now presents Plastikman’s Arkives, a comprehensive box set that pulls together all 17 years of the Plastikman story so far, including remastered versions of all six previously released Plastikman albums and a trove of rarities, unreleased sessions and new material.

Arkives, which is a strictly limited, made-to-order edition—only as many copies will be manufactured as have been pre-ordered between October 10 through December 31—will be released in four different formats:

Reference (11-disc CD/DVD/book edition)
Analog (6 records on 180-gram vinyl in a deluxe box, with poster)
Digital (digital download version)
Collection (including all CDs, vinyl, book, DVD, and bonus digital downloads)

Arkives Reference, the main personalized edition, features 11 CDs and 1 DVD. The deluxe packaging includes a slipcase with foldout sleeves for all 12 discs, plus a 64-page book that tells the Plastikman story in archival photos and a newly commissioned text. The set includes newly remastered versions of all six previously released Plastikman albums—Sheet One, Musik, Recycled Plastik, Consumed, Artifakts (B.C.), and Closer—and five further CDs of rare and unreleased material:

Rekonstruktions collects Plastikman’s classic and hard-to-find remixes for other artists, including La Funk Mob, System 7, New Order, Depeche Mode, Hardfloor, and even an unreleased remix of his own Robotman project.

Replikants features all-new remixes specially commissioned for the project, in which Hawtin's influences and heroes rework Plastikman’s back catalog. Reaching far beyond the world of techno, the disc features luminaries such as Vince Clarke, Cliff Martinez, François Kevorkian, Moby, Chris & Cosey, Severed Heads, Flood and Mute's Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones.

Two further CDs contain previously unreleased material. One features the never-before heard, complete recording session from which "Spastik" emerged, along with an unreleased John Peel in-studio live session. Still more previously unreleased Plastikman material follows on the second of these CDs, including the soon-to-be-released single “Slinky.”

Finally, Nostagik collects rare, out-of-print, vinyl-only editions and bonus Plastikman tracks.

In addition to the CDs, Optik is a DVD of classic & rare Plastikman videos plus previously unreleased footage of Plastikman live at Glastonbury 1995 and Plastikman live at Mutek in Montreal 2003.

Arkives Reference also includes a digital download code redeemable at m-nus.com, which will unlock additional material not included on the CDs (or other Arkives editions), insuring that each collector receives the most complete Plastikman ARKIVES to date.

In addendum, Arkives Analog features 6 pieces of 180 gram vinyl, exclusive tracks and a limited edition poster, presented in a deluxe custom box.

Arkives Digital will be the online download version of the project, offering a ‘lite’ version of the package including a limited selection of the material found in Reference and Analog editions.

After a summer of headlining some of the world's biggest festivals, BOOKA SHADE will return to North America this October in support of their 2010 album More! (Get Physical). Starting October 20 at Club Soda in Montreal, Canada, the electronic music producer/performers, armed with their keyboards, synths and electronic drum kit, will set off on a 10-date tour of headlining shows in Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York City and Philadelphia. Also included are festival appearances at LIVE 105’s Subsonic Spookfest in San Francisco and HARD Haunted Mansion in Los Angeles which closes the tour on Halloween night (10/31).

This past year, Berlin’s BOOKA SHADE—Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier—have cemented themselves as one of the most sought after international electronic live acts. On their last round of dates on this continent earlier this year, highlights included a sold-out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City which saw a stage invasion from the crowd (the New York Times (5/19/10) wrote, “This German electro duo is a perennial favorite of dedicated clubgoers – on a dark, sweaty dance floor, its slinky compositions become heavy with intrigue and promise.”), a Red Rocks Colorado performance that literally ‘rocked’ and stellar sets at Washington state’s Sasquatch and the Movement electronic festival in Detroit to close out each.

Meanwhile, fans can get cosmic with BOOKA SHADE‘s “Teenage Spaceman”—the follow-up single to “Bad Love” from More!—which will be available during the tour as an EP featuring five versions. BOOKA SHADE’s own ‘Booka In Space’ mix is the main title track of the EP and a melancholy masterpiece of suggestion and atmosphere, building to that breathless, eyes-closed moment you can only ever experience on the darkness of the dance floor. Sei A, one of the U.K.'s most promising techno talents, brings his distinct rich textured sound of warm subtle melodies and moody atmospheric synths with two signature remixes. With productions already signed to Gigolo, Buzzin' Fly and Turbo, this young Glaswegian delivers a mature style of deep tech house. Tim Deluxe again takes a detour from the style he’s known for and delivers the energetic ‘Future Disco’ remix. A radio version rounds out the package.

BOOKA SHADE gave the opportunity to aspiring film directors to make the video to “Teenage Spaceman.” After many brilliant entries from around the world, Matthew Harris from New Zealand was chosen by the duo as the winner. “There was the video from Matthew Harris, where a loner finds contact to the world again with a self-made space suit. The narrative is held together with amazing special effects and a fantastic performance by Scott Orr. The video is freaky, funny, a little trashy (in a positive Dee Lite circa early ‘90s way),” says Arno Kammermeier. “We've never had a video with a sense of humor before and our initial reservations were slowly quashed as something kept making us return to watch it over and over.” Check here for the winning video:

Coming off a wildly successful four-week summer Perfecto residency at Las Vegas’ Rain Nightclub in Palms Hotel and sold-out Electric Zoo festival gig, Germany’s ATB is already gearing up for another tour across the U.S. and Canada. His current single, “Could You Believe,” from his recently released mix compilation Sunset Beach DJ Session, has risen to #7 on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play Songs, proving that we just can’t get enough of André Tanneberger’s unique brand of electronic sounds and melodious club tracks.

The numbers don’t lie: 15,000 people came out to enjoy ATB’s dates at Rain, where he took over Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto Vegas residency for four exclusive nights last month. “I was really surprised when I got the offer for the summer residency at Perfecto Night,” ATB says. “It doesn’t happen too often that you get the chance to headline such a worldwide famous event series in a great city like Las Vegas. tiesto's one-night paycheck: $250,000

Buried in recent press coverage of an L.A. promoter's lawsuit against the city of L.A. for canceling a Tiesto concert at the Convention Center was the DJ's "guarantee." That would be $250,000. And, if it's a guarantee, that sounds like a possible minimum (as well as a possible maximum the promoter would be out if the show doesn't go on).

A quarter mil for a night of DJing? Whoa. I remember when rumor had it that Carl Cox charged $20k plus airfare for a trip to L.A. in the early '00s. And I'm guessing that 250k is minimum for Tiesto since this was said to be a 17,000-person event Halloween weekend. He often plays for much larger crowds.

The Deadmau5 juggernaut doesn't stop: The dance music producer has been tapped to provide the music for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, his publicist announced Monday. The event airs Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. According to a statement he "will serve as the musical maestro for the duration of the show and will create original remixes from a variety of artists."

Mr. Mau5 is also heading back on tour starting in October following a health-related hiatus. Here are his updated dates:

benny benassi to ride bike down california coast for tour

Here's a new twist to DJ tours: Benny Benassi today announced he's going to be riding his bike down the California coast during his tour of the Golden State next month. The gigs take him from San Francisco to San Diego, so that's several hundred miles worth of peddling.

According to a press release:

Besides catching Benassi swooping into their hometown on his custom-made, eco-friendly BBike made by iFixedGearModena, fans can also experience brand new songs from his upcoming fifth studio album SPACESHIP, due out later this year on Ultra Records, at each DJ appearance. Further details about the album will be revealed at a later date, but in the meantime he has made available the first single, also titled “Spaceship,” that features sultry vocals by Kelis and rhymes by apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas and producer Jean-Baptiste.

deadmau5 collapses onstage in washington, d.c.; cancels nine shows

Dance music star Deadmau5 collapsed while performing onstage in Washington, D.C. Friday night. After being hospitalized doctors said he suffered from exhaustion and would have to sit out his next nine dates, according to his publicist.

The DJ hopes to reschedule. According to a statement:

DEADMAU5 is sad to inform his fans that on the strict advice of the doctors, he now has no choice but to cancel the next nine shows of his summer tour schedule to allow for his recovery. The dates affected are listed below. Meanwhile, his North American dates for October which include appearances at Austin City Limits, the Treasure Island Music Festival, Voodoo Music Festival and three nights at Roseland Ballroom in New York City are still on course.

German techno DJ Chris Liebing, whose CLR podcast is arguably one of the more forward-thinking mix shows on the web, issued a statement this week on the Love Parade tragedy. Here it is in its entirety:

5 days after the tragic events at the Love Parade in Duisburg / Germany, I would like to share my thoughts in a more detailed statement. First of all I want to again express my sincere compassion for all the relatives and friends of the victims, as well as for the injured and traumatized who will have hard times to recover from what they experienced. I am still shocked about what I have seen and heard so far.

The Love Parade has been developing throughout the 90s, parallel to what I would call the “Techno Movement”. More precisely speaking, the Love Parade has been an expression of this movement. It has been a movement beyond any profit or image seeking ideas, which developed completely self-sufficient out of the underground. It was all about celebrating, dancing and having fun together.

Over the years, the numbers of attendants have been rising, and so have the financial needs. The costs were rising (city cleaning, etc.) and so has the profit (for the community and the others involved), and suddenly there was a certain “image” attached, which brands could use to increase their value.

Looking back, it is actually a logical consequence and maybe also easy to recognize, that an event like this would eventually fall into the hands of people who see “celebrating, dancing and having fun together” not as the main reason to host a Love Parade. This would actually still be tolerable, as long as human life would not be endangered, but what happened here is beyond anything one would have ever imagined.

It is absolutely appalling and shocking that the responsible organizers of the Love Parade and the city council in Duisburg have misused the “Techno Movement” with those fatal results. In their striving for image and profit, they have disregarded all measures of control and security and put people who really just wanted to celebrate, dance and have fun together in a situation in which 21 innocent persons had to die and countless have been injured and traumatized.

I hope that it will be possible to entirely clear up what has happened and that the guilty persons will be held responsible and punished as soon as possible.

But even this will not lessen the caused pain.

The least we owe to those who have died and those who got injured, is that we make sure that something like this won´t happen again in the future. New laws and rules won´t really help. We have seen that we can´t even trust those who should make sure that those rules are getting observed.

To really change something, we have to start with ourselves. We as DJs, we have to be even more sure about the “Who” we are playing for and the “Where” we are playing at – only like this, the fans can get a better orientation of where it is worth going and where it is save to celebrate.

Basically everybody can change a lot with his or her behaviour in this world. The more alert we go through life, the more conscious we can make choices between good and bad products, services, events or other things. Like this we minimize the scope of action for cold-blooded profiteers.

love parade over -- for ever

As the death toll from this year's event climbed to a reported 19, oganizer's of Germany's Love Parade said they were pulling the plug on the annual party indefinitely.

Organizer Rainer Schaller told reporters, "We are going to discontinue the event in the future and that means to say the Love Parade will no longer take place."

More than 340 people were reported to have been injured when the main gate -- reported to be the only entrance -- was apparently closed because of overcrowding and fans outside of it pushed forward anyway.

Tiesto, who performed at the event, stated via Twitter that he did not know what had happened until he landed in Portugal following his gig there. "I want to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the people who died today...I am really upset and sad about this."

18 dead at love parade in berlin

Eighteen people were killed at the Love Parade outside Berlin this weekend when crowds pushed into a tunnel -- reported to be the event's only entrance -- and the victims were apparently trampled or crushed. More than 200 people were injured. It's not clear what sparked the stampede at the techno party, said to have attracted 1.4 million people.

The New York Times reported that police observed overcrowding at the entrance and asked people to turn back just before apparent panic set in and fans rushed the gate about 5 p.m. Berlin time on Saturday.

Rescuers had a hard time getting to the injured as fans trampled others and continued on to the party. The scene was described as chaotic, and people partied on even as authorities tended to the dead and wounded.

The Los Angeles Times describes one scene:

Kevin Krausgartner, a 21-year-old who found himself trapped in the tunnel, told German news media he had witnessed "gruesome scenes."

"I've never seen anything like it," he said. "There were 25 people lying in a heap. I screamed; people could no longer get any air. I saw dead people, and one person was sitting there looking extremely pale. I wanted to give him some water, but the ambulance medic told me there was no point as he was already dead."

According to that people the event was held in the smaller city of Duisburg, prompting concerns that the 500,000-population municipality was too small to handle the influx of more than a million party-goers.
The show went on.

The crush follows a new spike in popularity for electronic dance music events that saw gatecrashing and other problems at this year's 160,000-strong Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles. Even the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, normally a more mainstream concert-going experience -- but one with electronic dance music overtones -- saw a flood of people at the gates on its first of three days this year.

Dubspot, New York City’s center for dynamic electronic music production and DJ education presents two of its renowned Ableton Live experts in Los Angeles for special workshops designed for the digital music enthusiast. Come and get a taste of the Dubspot experience and see why it has quickly become the premier center for digital music and an essential stop over for accomplished guest instructors from around the world.

Ableton Live: Production 101
On Wednesday, July 14th, Dubspot presents a FREE Ableton workshop featuring Los Angeles native Thavius Beck who will be teaching another installment of his ongoing Production 101 series in Ableton Live. Thavius is a composer of mercurial soundtracks for uncertain times conjoining various strains of electronic music to arrive at a daringly ambitious sound. An exceptional programmer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist and certified Ableton Live instructor, Thavius Beck’s many talents allow him to take music from idea to completion with an uncompromising vision and ear. This workshop is FREE and open to the public so the curriculum is designed around the demands of those in attendance. From basic to deep, various techniques are explained and explored, as well as some more esoteric approaches toward music creation on Ableton Live. In addition to the two hour workshop, there will be a DJ performance by DJ Heru and then a live performance from Baths, Thavius Beck and Blackbird. During the performances, certain aspects of the performer’s setup will be displayed on a screen so participants can get a better understanding of what the artist is doing on stage. The audience will have a very unique opportunity to see what goes into creating the live performances.

Benefit for the Humane Society with Free The Robots & Dubspot's LA Instructors
On Friday, July 23rd, Dubspot will host a benefit for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to assist animals affected by the oil spill and other disasters. Admission is FREE, and donations for the HSUS will be accepted.
Chris Alfaro aka Free the Robots is a genre-defying artist who pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions. The event which will also serve as an introduction to some of Dubspot's LA instructors, including electronic musician, producer/MC Thavius Beck, composer, producer, and sound designer Laura Escudé, and electronic musician and Chapman University professor Steve Nalepa (Stay tuned for more info! One man died and six other people were hospitalized in critical condition following a capacity rave at the Cow Palace in San Francisco over the holiday weekend.

According to the Bay Citizen -- in an account that has the ring of truth -- it's likely that ecstasy, overheated conditions and packed crowds contributed to the situation.

There's no conclusive evidence that ecstasy caused the Sunday death of 23-year-old Anthony Mata, but there are no links, besides rumors and ecstasy, between the victim and the other ravers who were hospitalized.

Authorities say the sources of ecstasy for all those who fell ill were not the same, and that a rumor that someone was poking people with a syringe filled with who-knows-what is not true.

The Cow Palace was packed with 16,000 people on Saturday for an event called Pop 2010: The Dream, which advertised Armin Van Buuren, Infected Mushroom, Benny Benassi, Boys Noize, Steve Aoki, LA Riots as talent.

A flier states that those "16 plus" were welcome, but the event was only scheduled until 2 a.m.

"The event itself was filled to capacity," a source told the paper. "It was hot in there. People have different tolerances. There could have been people [for whom] this was their first event, they took different dosages, different potencies. We don’t know if people knew what they were getting into."

Los Angeles Times music editor Randall Roberts takes a look at the big summer that's shaping up for L.A. dance music, including Electric Daisy Carnival, which last year claimed 135,000 attendees over two days, and the summer Hard festival, which promoter Gary Richards indicates has a capacity this year of 27,000. "I think it's always a little shocking to people when they realize how big the scene is, how big it's been and how long it's been around," KCRW music director Jason Bentley tells Roberts.

Dance music booster Will.i.am says the scene is popping and that he knows one DJ who made $20 million in gigs alone last year (Tiesto?): ""A DJ can make $500,000 a year and never put out a record and the song doesn't play on the radio," Mr. I.am says.

Two-time Grammy-nominated electronic act THE CRYSTAL METHOD (TCM) has announced they will lead into summer of 2010 with new single “Sine Language” featuring rappers LMFAO. The duo—Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland—have launched the party rocking anthem with a green screen video contest and DJ dates throughout the U.S. “Sine Language” is the fourth single from TCM’s current album DIVIDED BY NIGHT following “Drown In the Now” featuring Matisyahu, “Come Back Clean” with Emily Haines (Metric) and “Double Down Under.”

Beginning now through June 30, 2010, fans are encouraged to enter the contest, hosted by Dailymotion, to make the best video for the song. They will be provided with green screen footage of both The Crystal Method and LMFAO. Ricardo Villalobos To Perform At Movement Festival, 33 More Acts Announced

DETROIT, April 26, 2010—Paxahau announced today Ricardo Villalobos will be performing in Detroit for the Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta; the addition of a 5th stage sponsored by Movement Torino; and 32 more acts who will perform in Hart Plaza May 29-31 including Ghostland Observatory, Derrick May, Booka Shade, and Marco Carola.

Villalobos, a world-renowned microhouse and minimal techno DJ/producer, last performed in Detroit in 2002 when he played live at Paxahau Electronic Music Festival (PEMF), a four-day party that was held at the now closed Panacea Nightclub in downtown Detroit.

"Ricardo is looking forward to coming back to Detroit again after all these years," said his Agent Goetz Guse of Cocoon Agency out of Frankfurt, Germany. “His return to the United States and Detroit for the Movement Electronic Music Festival is exclusive to Paxahau. He isn’t booked to perform at any other venue in the States, and we don’t anticipate he will be this year."

In addition to Villalobos; the contemporary dance music duo Booka Shade from Berlin has been scheduled for a live performance; along with electro, rock, and funk duo Ghostland Observatory who will also perform live.

Movement Torino Sponsors 5th Stage at Detroit’s Movement Electronic Music Festival
Movement Torino, an electronic music festival in Italy that Paxahau formed a new partnership with in 2009, will be the sponsor of the fifth stage for the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit May 29-31. Last year the Movement Festival in Detroit had four stages.

In March a partial lineup of nearly 70 artists was released that included live performances by Kevin Saunderson's Inner City; Juan Atkin's Model 500; and Richie Hawtin presenting Plastikman.

Other artists signed to Cocoon Agency scheduled to perform at this year's Movement festival are Cassy and Onur Ozer, both were originally announced in March. Guse said they too "are very excited to play at Movement 2010."

Hot off the heels of his acclaimed Balance series edition and a successful Winter Music Conference debut, forward-thinking Frenchman Agoria is set to embark on his North American tour as he makes his way to the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit. With his recent spell-binding DJ sets at the Balance 16: Agoria release party and at the infamous Sunday School For Degenerates party in Miami, Agoria is now ready to bring his distinct track selection and mixing style to some of North America’s most forward thinking venues. juan maclean tours: thoughts on his dj kicks mix

DFA recording artist Juan MacLean is hitting the road to support his recently released, self-titled
mix-CD (dates below). I've been listening to the mix and find it irresistibly groovey.

The strange thing is, however, is how MacLean's DFA brethren (particularly James Murphy) made a name for themselves by dissing the linear, four-on-the-floor journey of DJ culture in favor of a punked-up, disco-fied vision of hipster music. It's strange because this mix offers up ... a linear, four-on-the-floor journey of DJ culture.

It's almost as if wannabes at the gate of club-topia -- Murphy, Steve Aoki, et. al. -- feel the need to act as though what DJ culture really needs is a non-linear, punk-rock kick in the arse. But once they get inside, it really is business as usual. It seems like the dissing-DJ-culture card (and Deadmau5 has done it too) is a ticket to ... DJ culture.

MacLean's mix sounds like DJ Dan playing a slower house set in the late 1990s, which is as good as it gets. But lets not ally ourselves with those who say DJ culture is lame, and then trod over well-worn terrain. If we want to hear DJ Dan play a slower house set, we don't have to travel to Williamsburg and pose in Ray-Bans with the hipster kids; we'll just break out an old mix-CD.

reflections on coachella 2010

Michael Lopez of LA Weekly sister paper Phoenix New Times has "An Open Letter To Coachella" that basically laments the festival's size increase from 60,000 to 75,000 people. "Was selling 75,000 tickets worth it to make the 2010 Coachella experience miserable for many in attendance," he writes.

I would tend to agree that the biggest problem at this year's festival was its size. I reported on three-hour waits for day one of the fest and how it seemed a little chaotic at the door. I later posted about "Five Ways Organizers Can Make Coachella A Better Experience," where I made points similar to Lopez's: " ... Its expansion to 75,000 people (and surely there were more Friday as people crashed the gates, got in with counterfeit tickets, or simply walked in without paying) changed the vibe for the worst," I write. I also take issue with the lack of edge in the lineup, with few if any surprising dance music acts (Tiesto, Deadmau5, LCD Soundsystem and Kaskade were big draws; the only act I had never heard of that I liked was a French crew called Club 75).

It's interesting to see many commenters agreeing with Lopez, with some saying this will be their last Coachella. (And for the record, while LA Weekly did team up with some sister papers in our coverage, I did not meet or talk to Lopez about the festival. I've never met him). One commenter on my "Five Ways" post had this similar and almost saddening sentiment: "By the time I left the field on Sunday, I turned and snapped a photo so I could remember exiting my last Coachella."

richie hawtin to use iphone app to interact with coachella audience

Richie Hawtin, under his Plastikman alter ego, will integrate his PLASTIKMAN SYNK app into his (sold-out) Coachella performance this weekend, a first for the DJ in the United States. The free app will involve audience participation among those who have downloaded it onto iPhones. I'm not really getting my head around what will happen between iPhone hipsters and Hawtin, but here's a video of the inaugural such performance in Germany last month.

The promoters for the ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL (UMF) have unveiled the third and final phase of artists confirmed for the world’s premier electronic music festival, taking place Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at Bicentennial Park in Miami. Set to join previously announced headliners Tiësto and Deadmau5, along with LIVE headliners Faithless Sound System, Groove Armada and Orbital are LMFAO, Sander Kleinenberg, Josh Wink, Hybrid (DJ set) Tania Vulcano, Afrojack and more.

Adding to one of the strongest and most diverse electronic line-ups ever assembled are Florence from Florence and the Machine, who will perform with Swedish House Mafia on the Ultra Main Stage Saturday, March 27, and Kelis, who is set to team with Benny Benassi for several songs as well. On the same day, Hybrid will headline with a DJ set on the UMF Radio stage in support of their new album Disappear Here, out March 29 on Distinctive Records. Joining all the artists on the new Ultra Main Stage is Vello Virkhaus (VJV2) who is set to pilot both days. Ultra Music Festival will be the only place fans can experience these artists during Winter Music Conference.

The event promoters have also announced the addition of four new arenas to the festival grounds: the UMF Ibiza Tent presented by Space Ibiza, the UMF Brasil Tent presented by We Love Brasil & Green Valley, the Root Society Dome and the Heineken Dome Experience. The UMF Ibiza Tent is the result of a new partnership between UMF Ibiza and Club Space Ibiza, bringing the Space Ibiza party to Miami. The party is set to continue throughout the summer as UMF travels to Ibiza to host the Space Ibiza Opening, Anniversary and Closing Parties.

The Root Society Dome has been described as "the biggest party dome on the planet." Of teaming with UMF, Root Society founder Captain Jeff Taylor says, "I know ULTRA is the place to release the Root Society brand after 7 years in the desert sanctuary Burning Man. If you're addicted to bass, you will be in this dome!"

Another addition to UMF is artist/composer Christopher Janney’s installation Sonic Forest which provides an interactive, aural and visual component that will entice festival goers into a unique environment. Triggered by both public interaction and electronic instruments, Sonic Forrest is composed of 16 eight-foot tall aluminum poles that contain audio speakers, lights and photo-electric cells. As people move closely by these “electronic trees,” they trigger both melodic and environmental sounds, in a sense “playing the forest.” When no one is moving in the space, the piece generates a series of preprogrammed patterns. During various parts of the installation, independent drummers join the environment, turning the Forest into a dance festival unto itself. Over the past five years, Sonic Forest has been featured at Bonnaroo, All Points West and Coachella in the US, as well as the Download Festival, Hyde Park Calling, Wireless and Glastonbury Festivals in the U.K., the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands and the Zaragoza World’s Fair in Zaragoza, Spain.

new club night goes up against avalon in l.a.

Avalon's lock on Saturday nights in Los Angeles didn't last long: Pasquale Rotella, who used to work with Avalon's Dave Dean when they were at nearby Vanguard, has announce he's starting a Saturday night superstar DJ party at a renovated Music Box Hollywood around the corner from Avalon.

The first night, March 20, will feature Sander Kleinenberg. The night will be called Decor and will be organized in conjunction with Rotella's Insomniac Events. The next night the venue will also host Groove Armada. A statement from the venue states that it is being restored to reflect its original, 1920s glamor.

The move will once again mean competition for DJ talent on Saturdays in L.A. Dave Dean moved his booking power to Avalon at the beginning of the year after Avalon's Garrett Chau peaced out to take a job with Lollapalooza. Dean, along with Liquified's Damian Murphy, is helping the club book DJs both Fridays and Saturdays. He also has events in San Diego, Orange County and Phoenix. Rotella is one of the kings of rave in L.A. and arguably holds the record for the largest such event, Electric Daisy Carnival, last summer.

Dan Ghenacia’s Parisian label Freak n Chic will join forces with Droog’s Los Angeles label Culprit for an open-air WMC Miami showcase at Grass on the evening of Weds March 24, 2010.

The two labels are no strangers having paired up on many previous occasions including The Rex in Paris, The Standard Rooftop in Los Angeles and at WMC in 2008.

On the bill at the WMC showcase for Freak n Chic will be label head Dan Ghenacia, Shonky and Dyed Soundorom, three mainstays of the French label's roster of talented artists. It will be Shonky’s only nocturnal gig at WMC. All three artists had banner years in 2009 with successful releases on FnC and other labels, as well frequent gigs at the best clubs around the world. A tight-knit clan of like-minded artists, Freak n' Chic have taken their patented showcases to Panorama Bar, Fabric, Rex and many others of the world’s most recognized clubs.

For Culprit, label founders Droog step up alongside Hot Natured. The party will mark the debut live performance from the much-buzzed about Hot Natured, the exciting duo of Jamie Jones and Lee Foss. The Culprit crew has had a memorable first year with five releases from its LA-based artists and assorted friends, which included Jamie Jones, Matt Tolfrey, Lee Foss, Ken Gibson aka [a]pendics.shuffle, Inxec and Ryan Crosson. Culprit’s fourth release ‘Even in Hollywood’ from Matt Tolfrey and Inxec chopped the Beatport deep house chart, the label’s third release ‘The Edge’ from Lee Foss was a MixMag single of the month. deep calls it quits

Marques Wyatt's Deep, a Sunday night house music Mecca that is closing out 11 years on the scene is also closing shop, the DJ announced. The Valentine's Day Deep at Vanguard featuring Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw and Wyatt will be the last Deep event.

It's not clear if it has anything to do with changes at Vanguard, its most recent home. As we reported recently, the club lost its anchor Saturday night promoter, Dave Dean, to nearby Avalon, and it seems to have cleared its calendar (for what, we don't know).

Wyatt has been a house music mainstay in Los Angeles since the 1980s and was a co-host of the legendary Does Your Mama Know? after-hours parties in the mid 1990s. So we don't think he's going to disappear just yet.

One of the bigger proponents of the dark wave of tech-house sweeping Europe -- Radio Slave, Sven Vath, Loco Dice, et. al. -- has been Dubfire of Deep Dish. The DJ recently announced that he's limiting is 2010 North American DJ dates to eight so that he can spend much of his time on the Continent. ""I try to apply a punk ethic to my own music it has to be groundbreaking, futuristic, unique and organic," the spinner states.

His remaining North American dates ("You heard right- these are DUBFIRE'S ONLY US DATES OF 2010," according to a statement from his people):

lady gaga sweeps dance grammys (updated)

Lady Gaga swept the dance categories at the Grammy Awards Sunday in Los Angeles. She took Best Dance Recording for Poker Face, beating out singles from the Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta & Kelly Rowland, Madonna and Britney Spears.

Gaga also took Best Electronic/Dance Album for The Fame, winning over long-players from The Crystal Method, David Guetta, LMFAO and the Pet Shop Boys.

David Guetta took the Best Remixed Recording Award (not a dance Grammy but rather an Engineering one) for a rerub of "When Love Takes Over" featuring Rowland.

By the way, I'm blogging from home. After being promised a ticket to the show (along for one for my music editor at LA Weekly), none was waiting for me when I went to pick up credentials yesterday. (His never came through either). This, by the way, was after negotiations with three officials from the Grammys who all signed off on the idea as part of my participation and the Weekly's permission for me to blog for someone else.

However, I was told if I turned in my press credentials yesterday I could pick up a ticket to the main show that would be waiting for me at a nearby hotel. So, I turned in my credentials. The ticket was not waiting for me at said hotel. I was told I could then pick it up at the hotel at one specific time Sunday, one I couldn't make for personal reasons. So, without those press credentials I had dutifully turned in (they don't give them out the day of the event), the 'blogga is assed out and bummed. So the official Grammy dance blogger? He'll be watching from home.

UPDATE: My music editor at LA Weekly, Randall Roberts, tells me that once he got his media credentials and was in the press room the afternoon of the Grammys (dressed down, like everyone else in the press area) that a Grammy contact walked up to him and offered him not one but two tickets. Strange, since I was told we could not have press credentials and tickets at the same time, because there was no previous indication that the Grammy folks would come through with tix, and because it's possible this happened after I originally posted the above).

damian lazarus takes his label roster on a 'rebel rave' tour

Damian Lazarus is taking some of the top talent from his Crosstown Rebels label on a two-month North American journey he calls the "Rebel Rave Tour." On the plane will be Lazarus, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler and Deniz Kurtel.

"The Rebel Rave tour is a great opportunity for all the Rebel family to gather together for awesome parties at some of the best clubs in the world," Lazarus says. giant and dave dean are back at avalon hollywood

Dave Dean and his Giant club brand are back as Saturday-night co-promoters at Avalon Hollywood (pictured above). Dean was booted from the club in 2006, with rumors claiming that he took too much of the door for the owners' taste. He went on to establish Giant at nearby rival club Vanguard, and the two battled for talent and ticket-buyers. Avalon's lead promoter, Garrett Chau, left late last year to take a job "to oversee the global expansion of Lollapalooza," he told us, leaving an opening at the venue. Vanguard, meanwhile, appears to be void of promoters and upcoming events (its website's calendar is virtually empty).

traffic calls it quits

Late notice, but I wanted to catch up on this: Traffic Events, a Los Angeles club promoter that was behind some of the more core, groovy happenings in the city, called it quits at the end of the year.

"Traffic Events will regrettably be closing its offices," stated promoter Richard Agopian. "Traffic has ceased all promotion activities. I'd like to personally thank you all for your support throughout the years, we could not have done it without you."

Agopian, however, has flipped it and is starting a new promotion venture called AterEgo Events, Inc., so I'm sure we'll be getting some more of the good vibe.

That onetime Playboy who was found murdered in Miami over the weekend had spent Saturday night/Sunday morning at famed, superstar DJ haven Space in downtown Miami. Her boyfriend reports that 26-year-old Paula Sladewski was last seen at the venue early Sunday.

The pair had reportedly gone to Miami to see a Lady Gaga concert New Year's Eve. Her boyfriend, who police have called "a person of interest" in the case, said he was ejected from the club after an altercation and that she stayed. That night Sladewski's burned-beyond-recognition in a Miami dumpster. She lived in Southern California.

Space is home to DJ Oscar G and host to some of the better super-club parties during the Winter Music Conference in March, including the Yoshitoshi label's annual affair.

We know, you're probably scratching your head. But we'd have to agree -- in context. Alexandra Le Tellier at the Los Angeles Times-based publication Brand X has a rundown of the nightlife trends to watch for in 2010, and chief among them is good old fashioned house music. Of course, she's speaking of sounds for the velvet-rope world of the more-exclusive Hollywood bottle-service scene (although Le Tellier says that too is changing).

She writes that hip-hop (B.E.P., et. al.) has taken the lead and immersing club-goers in more up-tempo, more-electronic beats, and that now "club-goers can't get enough." (I witnessed this recently on what I thought was a non-dance night at Hollywood hot-spot Playhouse, which was filled with the sounds of commercial-remix house. People -- and I'm really talking rich, young, and white people here -- were going off).

" ... This shift marks the end of an era" of what DJ Zen Freeman calls "the forefront DJs," she writes: "Z Trip, Mark Ronson and the late Adam Goldstein (better known as AM), who dominated the A-list club scene concepting hip-hop and rock mash-ups in the 2000s."

oakenfold remembers brittany murphy

Superstar DJ Paul Oakenfold, who put the vocals of actress Brittany Murphy on his 2006 single "Faster Kill Pussycat," issued a statement about her death this week.

"Brittany Murphy was an amazing talent," he stated, "but above all, she was an amazing person. She will be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences go out to her family."

The track was featured on his album A Lively Mind.

Murphy died Sunday of unknown causes after paramedics were called to her Los Angeles home above the Sunset Strip. TMZ reported that many prescription drugs were found in her home. I've been blogging a lot about it at LA Weekly.
