nyt reviews tiesto

The New York Times this week takes a look at Tiesto's rock-star-level tour, calling him "a titan of trance, the most crowd-pleasing beat in electronic dance music — perhaps because it’s unsubtle enough to tell even a dance-impaired clubgoer when to move." Tiesto DJ'd three sold-out shows at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. He's scheduled for three dates in L.A. in November as well.

I had a little LOL moment, too, when the writer, pop critic Jon Pareles, called the genre "virtually unchanged since the 1990s." Has he been reading me? Tour info.

I'm all for a guy trying to make a buck, but Tiesto's DJ sets appeals to the lowest common denominator. It's the same crap as what's become of Paul Oakenfold's (oops, now only Oakenfold) "DJ Sets." These guys might help to popularize dance music, but certainly not the genre's edgier forms. It's just candy.
