Groove Armada is releasing a new EP, and it won't be on Sony, which apparently let its deal with the duo expire last year. No. GA is unleashing "Drop The Tough," "Go," "Pull Up (Crank It Up)" and "El Padrino" via rum-maker Bacardi. The release is part of a one-year contract that will have GA putting out Bacardi-labeled music at the alcohol maker's B-Live Share site. A free MP3 from the EP is already available this week, although the entire thing is officially out March 2.
The deal is part of a new wave of non-traditional music releases, promotion and marketing that forgoes major labels. Scion, as you've read here, has released music and remixes to promote its brand. Artists get paid and get their music out, so many seem to be happy about the new business model.
"We wanted to find a way of embracing the fact there is free music out there," GA's Andy Cato told Billboard, "but giving it value again."
