rewind

In today's Los Angeles Times Guide section I take a look at the 9-year-strong drum 'n' bass night Respect, which recently moved to the Echoplex in L.A.'s Echo Park neighborhood. After all these years since d 'n' b first hit the scene, I was struck by how vital, young and energized the crowd there is. Although the founders of Respect, Justin Ford and DJ Machete, are trying to tone down the L.A. scene's downer-than-thou drum 'n' bass image, Ford says, "You won't find people with glow sticks here. If people bring them, they'll get clowned."
