Sky's the limit: After vowing to take its New Year's Eve block party to an indoor locale this year, Giant's Los Angeles event is back to the semi-open air on Dec. 31, albeit in tents on private land that will apparently require no street closures. Promoters are calling the party Giant Maximus, in contrast to last year's failed Giant Village, which was moved to summer under a cloud of controversy. (Organizers pulled the plug last minute, blaming rain, which had just ended, but also amid a trickle of ticket sales and big league talent costs from headliners Black Eyed Peas and Flaming Lips, the latter of which apparently wasn't paid for the scheduled performance. Some folks still haven't received refunds for their tickets of $65-$150 and more, and there is still some chatter about a possible class action lawsuit against the promoter).
The new event near West Eighth and Figueroa streets downtown (I'm guessing it's in a parking lot) will feature Sasha & John Digweed with Jimmy Van M. as well as Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Sander Kleinenberg, Jason Bentley, Boris M.D., the Architects of Sound and more. Capacity is reported to be 10,000 divided among three "big top" structures fitted with sound isolation material. VIP tickets will go for $150.
Given that the organizers have narrowed the talent field back down to dance music only and are crafting a weather-proof venue, I would bet that this show will likely go on. Still, it's hard to go with the flow on this one when folks are still out hard-earned cash to this promoter, which is spending their money to promote another event that will line its pockets.
